Picking Apart the Season Finale: Blair and Chuck

by Kelly on May 22nd, 2008

She wants to be Audrey Hepburn. He is the devil himself. And together, Gossip Girl’s Blair and Chuck are quite a pair.

I wanted to hate them together. I am not a fan of the reformed bad boy story line - it usually happens too quickly (ugh). And remember, Chuck’s past goes beyond just being a bit mean - he actually tried to assault Jenny early in the season. The boy has issues.

All of that said, I like Blair and Chuck together much better than Blair and Nate. Blair and Nate struck me as a couple that felt that they had to be together because their friends and family wanted them to; Blair and Chuck are a couple that can’t stay apart despite what their friends and family thought.

Let me be clear. I’m not saying that bickering and meanness equals love. I think that a real relationship requires a certain amount of respect, admiration and tenderness that I don’t think that Blair and Chuck have at this stage. But man are they fun to watch.

audrey-hepburn_nc.jpgThe story line is very 1954 Sabrina: the much sought after beauty (played by Audrey Hepburn), the man who doesn’t think he wants her until it’s too late (played by Humphrey Bogart) and the almost too good to be true guy that she wants but he isn’t sure that he wants (played by William Holden). Like in that movie, the fun is really in watching all of them discover what (or who ) is really important.

And that’s exactly why I’m glad that Chuck didn’t get on that helicopter with Blair. They both need time to figure out what it is that they really want. And maybe that is each other. And maybe it’s something else.

The truth is, Bart’s speech didn’t change what Chuck was thinking. I believe that he always thought he was in over his head. He’s a boy who likes to be in control - only Blair is the kind of girl that wants to be in control, too. That’s a tough combination.

What Bart’s speech really changed wasn’t Chuck’s mindset but his timing.

It was a great way to end the season. We all know that Chuck won’t really end up with Amelia. She’s just a distraction. The real question is for how long…

I thought William Holden was the playboy… Bogey was an old, closed-up guy, who always thought Sabrina was in love with his brother, the playboy. :P
That said, I do agree about B and C needing to find out what they really want… and I do hope that’s each other. :)

I love Blair and Chuck together. I like the fact that Chuck has this “little itsy” problem and he can’t control himself with other women. But hopefully, he will come to his senses (after some drama =D) and get together with Blair. I loved what Blair did after Chuck did not show up. It showed that she was not willing to suffer in that relationship which is something we can see from both parts.

Here here! I agree with everything you say!

Does anyone else think that it would be kind of…how do you put this into words?…awkward if they became an official couple on the finale? When I thought about it, I couldn’t wrap my mind around it…they do need more time before becoming official. And they’re so much fun to watch because of their tension & chemistry! I can’t wait for season two!

I love that you used the Sabrina analogy- it’s so true of them.

The thing, I believe there IS a great degree of respect and trust between Chuck and Blair. There has been from the beginning of the series: even when he was a raping rapist in the pilot, he was the only one who saw her side of the situation. He was the one who she would turn to when she needed to “plot” something. Granted, that’s not what makes a relationship- but I think they are the closest to not being dysfunctional out of any of the gossip girl couples.

That being said, I’m also pleased they didn’t just ride off into the sunset. Chuck needs to figure himself out before he can take on Blair, because she’s a lot to handle. And Blair needs to let Chuck know she really wants him and isn’t just settling- because that’ll be a good way to get him going in the right direction.
