Who Cares About Touchdowns? Tell Me About Strikes!
There is finally some good news in the ongoing writers strike which has affected Gossip Girl and other television and movie productions.
According to reports, Hollywood studios and striking writers have made what’s being called “significant progress” on the issues of compensation for projects distributed via the Internet. One of the most controversial strike issues has been how much and when writers are paid for projects delivered online after they’ve been broadcast on TV.
Why does this matter? It definitely affects a program like Gossip Girl which is garnering mediocre numbers on mainstream television but is performing extremely well in alternative media, such as iTunes. As shows like Gossip Girl become more popular on the internet, writers want a piece of the pie - but studios have countered that hashing out a percentage is impossible at this stage due to the uncertainty of revenue. The details of any compromise have not been made public - but insiders speculate that a deal could be reached as early as next week!
