“The Handmaiden’s Tale” Recap

It’s time for the masked ball! Everyone is making preparations… except for Dan. Serena hasn’t asked him yet - and he’s not sure why.

And all is well with S and B. They are back to being old pals… for now. Serena agrees to be one of Blair’s “ladies” for the ball. Blair encourages Serena to ask Dan, which she plans to do…

Only when she calls to do it, she hears a new voice on the end of the phone. It’s Vanessa, Dan’s old “friend” from years ago. But Dan tells Serena that it’s Jenny. That proves a bit tricky since Jenny is running errands for Blair.

Nate witnesses his father fretting about being chosen to take Eleanor’s company public. It makes him wonder about other things that have been strange lately - including the missing money from before which has no mysteriously reappeared. While flipping through his passbook, he finds drugs that aren’t his (he is solely, as Chuck points out, an herb man). He tries to contact Blair but she’s not answering her phone. Desperate to talk to someone, he finds himself at Serena’s home.
Vanessa tries to convince Dan to go out for old time’s sake. She mocks his uptown lifestyle and reminds him of their old relationship.

Blair instructs Kati and Isabel to find Serena a date for the ball. Dan sees the plea online and decides to crash the ball. He bails on Vanessa.
Vanessa shows up at Dan’s place for their “date” while Rufus gets ready for his evening out. Rufus and Vanessa talk briefly about her feelings for Dan.

Jenny comes home, upset about not getting invited to the ball. Vanessa talks her into going and helps her secure a dress (from the costume department) and get into the party.

The party - replete with Moroccan theme - begins. Rufus is introduced to Eleanor, who believes that she’s Lily’s date. Bart Bass shows up with Carissa, his stunning date (half his age, played by the beautiful but poor actress, Caridee). Suddenly, Rufus understands that he’s meant to make Bart jealous.

Jenny feels out of place at the party - at first. Chuck sees Jenny but doesn’t know who she is. He sees her borrowed diamond bracelet and assumes that she is one of the privileged.

Dan is unhappy to see Serena having a good time without him. He cuts in but she is not happy to see him. She calls him on his lie. He says that he wasn’t sure why he lied and that his relationship with Vanessa was “complicated.” He kisses her on the dance floor - and Vanessa sees it happen (she was looking to return Jenny’s keys to her). She leaves and he follows her out. She blurts out that he said he loves her - he corrects her to say “loved” as in the past tense.

Rufus kisses Lily to make Bart jealous. It works - and their respective reactions to the kiss stun the both of them (editor’s note: the hot dad deserves a little happiness!).

Jenny toys with Chuck as revenge. She leaves him nearly naked, trapped on the roof.

Nate is distracted by his father’s troubles. He is supposed to be looking for Blair but his mind is on his father. His father finds out from Eleanor that he is likely to not be chosen to provide legal services for the IPO. Kati and Isabel tell him to look for Blair. Blair goes into the ladies’ lounge where she sees Jenny and has a nice chat - they trade masks. Nate mistakes Jenny for Serena and kisses her. He realizes his mistake when he sees Serena. Serena sends Nate over to find Blair at midnight. Blair is not happy.

Dan and Serena make up with a smooch.

Nate’s mother finds her father’s drugs and assumes that they belong to him. He doesn’t tell what he really thinks… that the drugs belong to his father.

Vanessa comes back to the apartment to make up with Dan. They agree to remain friends, he tells her about Serena - and she listens.
