Is Gossip Girl too racy for TV?

by Kelly on September 13th, 2007

Tongues are already wagging about the amount of sex, drugs and drinking in the first episode of Gossip Girl. These are, we are constantly reminded, teenagers.

It brings to mind the same argument that’s being considered right now with respect to rap music: is the show merely reflecting a culture, or is it encouraging it?

I’m not sure what the answer is. I think it’s clear that some teenagers do have sex, do take drugs and do drink. I also think that many teenagers do the right thing. I personally don’t believe that a culture that glorifies what’s considered bad behavior directly causes the behavior. I’d like to think that friends, parenting, school - and yeah - a teen’s own conscience - really controls his or her actions.

What do you think?

I agree! Way too much drinking/drugs/sex for high schoolers - this show will appeal to this age and they will begin to think this is normal and ok behavior!!!

I don’t think it’s too racy it’s. If anythings too Racy it’s real life!
Look theres a lot people don’t notice like Blair isn’t really ready to go all the way. And Nate’s drug use is a turn off to girls!
And even in other show like the O.C and one tree hill it had Drug/Durinking/Swearing/Sex and more. Really this doesn’t mean that kids are gonna wanna do any of it. They being the show if they where!

As a grad of a private high school, I think this show is right on the money as far as what really goes on in highschool. Some kids drink, do drugs, have sex: that’s a fact. Of course, some don’t. Showing what really goes on isn’t going to make kids more likely to behave in any certain way. Trust me, kids know what’s going on.

The only thing I wonder about is how even the “good kids” on this show manage to get into bars/get served all the time. Even the best fake IDs aren’t foolproof, and this show seems to take it as granted that either everybody has an ID or every bar in the world doesn’t give a crap that they are serving minors. Of course, there could be some off-screen bribes taking care of bartender scruples…

personally i think that it is not too racey for today’s youth. There are other shows that are so much worse. Also saying that if kids see sex/drugs/drinking that they will go out and do it, says like if people go out and see a murder movie that they are going to go out and kill people. Just because it’s there doesn’t mean that people are going to do it.
